Long Branch Public Schools June 20, 2008

Welcome to all Long Branch Public School Staff Members,

This blog is here for us as educators to help each other out to come up with suggestions and solutions on how to help with the bullying situations that happen in your schools. Soon there will be a sample anti-bullying contract on our website that you can download and discuss within your schools. Please post any questions you may have so that others can contribute to you. If you have questions about specific situations, please be considerate and leave out names. I look forward to being able to open this forum so that we can take steps towards helping some children get past some of these difficult situations. Let's get blogging!

I saw this on News 12 for New Jersey and was very impressed with the interview. As a teacher, I'm always interested in helping kids ward off bullies. I was hoping you could repeat what steps a child can take to keep things from escalating into a full blown confrontation.

Absolutely.I am glad that you enjoyed to interview. The steps that a child can take to keep things from escalating in my opinion would be the following:

1. They should understand that they have a choice how to react and the bully just wants a reaction.
2. Practice the POWERLOOK at home (look at the top of the forehead, not the eyes)
3. The child should walk away from the bully while using the POWERLOOK
4. Most times the bully will not escalate to a physical situation. If it might, I suggest a school intervention with follow through of consequences AND enrolling a child in a martial arts program.
5. The child should alert an adult that the situation is happening, however make the adult promise to keep it confidential. If the adult does not promise, find a different adult.
6. Talk to an adult about how they feel and try to empower the child
